Setting up cart cross-sells

Cross-sells are products you recommend to customers on the cart page, under Recommended for you. Use them to offer the services that naturally go with what the customer is already buying, such as email or an SSL certificate alongside a domain, or a backup plan alongside hosting. A customer who adds a cross-sell buys it in the same checkout as the rest of their order, so they don't need to come back for it later.

Cross-sells are optional. Nothing shows in the cart until you set up at least one.

Before you begin

Cross-sells use the recurring products in your product catalog. Only products that are published and visible on your storefront can be recommended, so publish the products you want to recommend first. Draft, hidden and Archived products can't be picked. See Creating and managing products in Storefront.

The product you set cross-sells on doesn't need to be published yet. You can set them up while it's still in Draft, and change them at any time after it's published.

You can set up cross-sells in two ways, and use both on the same product:

Recommend a product...Set it up on...
When a specific product is in the cartThe product that's in the cart, in its Cross-Sell Products section.
Whenever any domain is in the cartThe product you want to recommend, with its Domain Cross-Sell toggle.

Domains can't be picked as products to recommend, which is why recommending a product alongside domains has its own setting.

Recommend products alongside a product

  1. Log in to Storefront Manager.
  2. Go to Settings → Product Catalog and open the product that customers will have in their cart.
  3. In the Cross-Sell Products section, click Add.
  4. In the Add Cross-Sell Products pop-up, open Products to Recommend and select one or more products.
  5. Click Add.

The products you selected now appear in the Cross-Sell Products section.

Recommendations work in one direction only. If you add Product B to Product A's list, customers with Product A in their cart see Product B, but having Product B in the cart doesn't recommend Product A. To recommend them both ways, add each product to the other's list.

Change or remove recommendations

To change the list, click Edit in the Cross-Sell Products section, update your selection in Products to Recommend, and click Save Changes.

To remove a single product, open the menu next to it and select Remove. Storefront confirms the product has been removed.

Removing a recommendation only stops it showing in the cart from then on. Customers who already added it to their cart keep it, and existing subscriptions aren't affected.

Recommend a product whenever a domain is in the cart

  1. Go to Settings → Product Catalog and open the product you want to recommend.
  2. In the Domain Options section, turn on Domain Cross-Sell.

From then on, the product appears under Recommended for you for any customer with a domain in their cart, whether they're registering it or transferring it in. Turn the toggle off to stop recommending it.

Domain Cross-Sell works well with products that also have Require Domain turned on, such as email or SSL. See Products that require a domain below for what happens when the customer adds one.

What your customer sees

When the cart contains an item with cross-sells, or a domain while a product has Domain Cross-Sell on, the cart page shows a Recommended for you section below the cart items. Each recommendation shows:

  • The product name and description, as set in your product catalog.
  • The recurring price and billing frequency, for example $16.00 / year, in the currency the customer is shopping in.
  • A Sale tag with the original price struck through, if the product has an active promotion. See Setting Up Promotional Pricing.
  • A notice that the product renews automatically, so the customer knows before they add it.

If the product has more than one billing option, the recommendation shows the first one you created. Once the product is in the cart, the customer can switch to a different plan from a dropdown on the cart item.

The customer adds a recommendation with the cart button on its price, and a notification confirms it was added. The product then leaves Recommended for you. If the customer removes it from the cart later, it shows up as a recommendation again.

Standalone products

A product that doesn't require a domain goes into the cart as its own item, with a Subscription tag, exactly as if the customer had added it from your Products page. The customer can change the quantity or remove it like any other item. It checks out with the rest of the order using the same payment method, and renews automatically on the same terms as any other subscription.

Products that require a domain

A product with Require Domain on is attached to a domain instead of becoming its own item. It appears inside that domain's card in the cart, with its own price and a remove button.

  • If the cart has one domain, Storefront attaches the product to it as soon as the customer adds it.
  • If the cart has more than one domain, the recommendation expands to show Select domains for this product, with every domain in the cart selected. The customer clears any they don't want and clicks Add to Selected.

If the customer removes a domain from the cart, Storefront removes any product attached to it too.

What the customer pays, and how the product renews, depends on whether the product has Sync Domain Lifecycle turned on:

With Sync Domain LifecycleWithout Sync Domain Lifecycle
Price in the cartCharged for the same number of years as the domain registration. A two-year registration means two years of the product.Charged for one billing period of the plan shown.
PlansOne yearly billing option, so there's no plan to switch. The customer can switch plans after adding it, like any other product.
RenewalRenews on the domain's expiry date, together with the domain.Renews on its own schedule.
If the domain expiresExpires with the domain.Suspended until the domain is renewed.

Either way, the product can't outlive its domain. If the domain is later transferred out or deleted, the product ends too. Both settings are under Domain Options on the product. See Creating and managing products in Storefront.

After purchase, the cross-sell becomes a regular subscription. Its order appears on your Orders page, and you manage it like any other subscription. See Managing customer subscriptions.

Troubleshooting

I set up a cross-sell but it isn't showing in the cart.
Check the setup matches what's in the cart. Products in a product's Cross-Sell Products section only show when that product is in the cart. To show a product whenever a domain is in the cart, turn on its Domain Cross-Sell toggle instead. Also check that the customer hasn't already added it, since recommendations disappear once added.

A product I want to recommend isn't in the Products to Recommend list.
Only published products that are visible on your storefront can be picked. Publish the product, or turn on its visibility in Quick Settings, then add it.

I added Product B to Product A, but Product A doesn't show when Product B is in the cart.
Cross-sells are one-way. Open Product B and add Product A to its Cross-Sell Products section.

The cart shows the wrong plan for a product.
Recommendations always show the first billing option you created for the product. The customer can change plans from the cart item after adding it.

A customer added an email product to the wrong domain.
When the cart has more than one domain, every domain is selected by default. The customer can remove the product from any domain's card in the cart.

A customer was charged for more than one year of a product they added from the cart.
The product has Sync Domain Lifecycle on, and the domain in the cart is registered for more than one year. Synced products are bought for the same number of years as their domain, so both renew on the same day.

I removed a cross-sell, but a customer still has it in their cart.
Removing a cross-sell only stops new recommendations. Anything already in a cart or already purchased stays as it is.
