Creating and Managing Coupon Codes
Coupon codes let you offer a discount to specific customers instead of your whole storefront. A customer enters the code at checkout to receive the discount, so you can hand it out to the people you want to reach, such as a partner, an influencer, or a lapsed customer, without lowering prices for everyone else.
This is different from Promotional Pricing, which discounts a product for every visitor automatically. Use a coupon code when you want to control who gets the discount and how it's distributed. Use Promotional Pricing when you want to run a storefront-wide sale. See [Setting Up Promotional Pricing in Storefront] for that workflow.
Before you begin
- If you plan to offer a fixed-amount or set-price discount, enable the currencies you want to discount in first. Only currencies active on your Storefront appear when you configure a coupon. See [Selling in Multiple Currencies].
- Coupon codes work alongside your existing TLD pricing. A coupon discounts the price a customer pays; it doesn't change your default markup or per-TLD pricing. See [Setting Up Domain Pricing].
Create a coupon code
-
Navigate to the Coupons section in Storefront Manager.
-
Click Create Coupon.
-
Enter a code, or click Generate for a random 8-character code. Codes must be 4 to 32 characters, letters, numbers, and hyphens only, and unique within your store. Codes are not case-sensitive: a customer typing
save20orSAVE20both redeem the same code. -
Choose a discount type:
- Percentage — a discount from 1 to 100%. A 100% discount brings the price to $0.
- Fixed amount — a currency amount taken off the price. If the discount is larger than the price, the price drops to $0, not below. Set this separately for each active currency.
- Set price — the exact price a customer pays, for example $0.99 for a first-year domain. Set this separately for each active currency.
-
Choose which products the coupon applies to: a specific TLD, a list of TLDs, all TLDs, or all products. For TLDs, also choose whether the discount applies to new registrations, renewals, transfers, or a combination.
-
Set a usage limit: one redemption per customer account, or unlimited. With a one-per-account limit, a customer can apply the code to one item in an order; with unlimited, it can apply to multiple items in the same order.
-
Set when the coupon starts: immediately, or on a future date and time. A coupon with a future start date shows as Scheduled and is rejected at checkout until then.
-
Optionally, set an expiry date and time. Without one, the coupon stays valid until you pause or delete it.
-
Save the coupon.
If you leave this flow before saving, your coupon is not created. Fields you've filled in are not preserved.
Manage your coupon codes
The Coupons list shows every coupon you've created, filterable by status: Active, Draft, Scheduled, Paused, or Expired. Each row shows the coupon name and code, its status, discount type, eligible products, number of uses, and its created, start, and end dates.
Available actions depend on status:
| Status | Available actions |
|---|---|
| Active | Edit, Pause, Duplicate |
| Draft | Edit, Duplicate, Delete |
| Scheduled | Edit, Duplicate |
| Paused | Edit, Resume, Duplicate, Delete |
| Expired | Duplicate, Delete |
Editing a coupon. You can change the coupon's name, eligible products, dates, and discount amount at any time. The code string cannot be changed once a coupon has been activated. The discount type also locks once a coupon has been activated, even if it's since been paused. Changes to an active coupon apply immediately to new redemptions; they don't change orders that already used the coupon.
Pausing a coupon. Pausing stops new redemptions without deleting the coupon or its history. A paused code returns the same error a customer would see for an invalid code. Resume it at any time to make it redeemable again.
Duplicating a coupon. Duplicating creates a new Draft with the same settings and "(Copy)" appended to the name. Start and end dates are cleared. You'll need to set new dates before activating the copy.
Deleting a coupon. You can delete a Draft or Expired coupon. Active or Scheduled coupons must be paused first. Deletion is permanent and asks for confirmation before it completes.
Viewing redemption history. Each coupon has a redemption log showing the date, order ID, discounted product, discount amount applied, and the customer who redeemed it. Use this to see who has used a given code.
What your customers see
At checkout, customers enter their code in a dedicated coupon field and click Apply. A valid code is validated and applied without a page reload, and the discount appears as its own line in the order summary, for example "Coupon FREEDOMAIN: -$15.00," alongside the new total. Customers can remove an applied coupon to restore the original prices.
Only one coupon code can be active on an order. If a customer enters a second code, they're asked to confirm before it replaces the first; codes don't stack.
If a coupon discounts a TLD's first-year price, the standard renewal price still displays at checkout before payment, in line with ICANN disclosure requirements. This keeps the ongoing cost visible even when the first year is heavily discounted or free.
A customer sees the same generic error message for several different problems: an unrecognized code, an expired code, a code that's reached its usage limit, and a code that hasn't started yet. They'll see a different, specific message only when the code doesn't apply to anything in their cart.
Troubleshooting
A customer says a coupon isn't working, but I know it's valid.
Check the coupon's status in your Coupons list. A Scheduled coupon isn't redeemable until its start date and time. A Paused coupon returns the same error as an invalid code. Also confirm the item in the customer's cart is within the coupon's eligible products.
I can't delete a coupon.
Active and Scheduled coupons can't be deleted directly. Pause the coupon first, then delete it.
I can't change my coupon's discount type.
Discount type locks once a coupon has been activated, even if you've since paused it. Create a new coupon if you need a different discount type.
A customer's coupon only discounted part of their order.
If a cart contains both eligible and ineligible products, the coupon discounts only the eligible items.
